McGURK,
John
Eamon
With profound sadness the family announces the peaceful passing
of their beloved father John in Toronto, on March 12th, 2008.
John was surrounded by family, daughter Kelly (Chuck), sons John
(Suzanne) and Derek (Cate), sisters Mary and Kay and brothers
Steve and Terry who will mourn the loss of a wonderful father
and brother. John was born and raised in Toronto to parents Richard
and Bridget on November 9, 1938. In 1962 he married his wife,
Estelle (née
BEAMISH,) who predeceased him in 2005. John's eight
grandchildren, Ryan, Brett, Kaitlin, Hailey, Josh, Lynda, Ava
and Nash will miss his presence at family dinners, his generosity,
humour, and his unfailingly good advice. He joined the Royal
Canadian Air Force in 1956 and was a proud Veteran. A dedicated
firefighter for 31 years, John served with the former East York
Fire Department, retiring in 1993 with a record of excellent
service and a history of legendary practical jokes. John will
be remembered for his exuberance and warmth. He was an excellent
story teller and listener, who loved laughter and did much good.
John was a consummate Irishman and a proud Canadian. John was
a sports enthusiast and enjoyed working at various times for
the Toronto Argonauts, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Molson
Indy. An avid golfer, John had been most recently employed by
Coppinwood Golf Course in Uxbridge. John had a keen interest
in hockey and derived tremendous enjoyment from watching his
children and grandchildren play the game at various arenas throughout
the Greater Toronto Area. He will be remembered for the words
of encouragement he offered freely not only to his own players,
but to others as well. John was always happy to spend time with
fellow veterans at the Uxbridge Legion as well as other Legions
in the areas he visited while on vacation. The family wishes
to thank the medical and spiritual support staff of Saint Michael's
Hospital for their care and compassion, and Father Paul
McCARTHY
of Uxbridge for his guidance and support. In lieu of flowers
memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion,
Branch 170, Uxbridge. Friends may visit at the Low and Low Funeral
Home 23 Main Street South Uxbridge 905-852-3073 on Sunday, March 16,
2008 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held
at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 70 Toronto Street, Uxbridge
at 11: 00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2008 (a date which John would
no doubt have appreciated). Following the Funeral Mass, the family
welcomes you to join for a reception at The Royal Canadian Legion
