MCINNES/MCINNIS, John, Ed.D. (1927-2008)
On March 1st, after a short acute illness, John passed away peacefully with family members at his side, at Saint_Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto. John was a loving brother to Roberta (deceased husband Bob LEE,) loving uncle to Rosemary ELWOOD, Don ROUTLEY (Patricia GLEESON), Linda (John BOORE), Nancy (Dale DOIGE), loving great-uncle to Karen, Margaret, Erin, Jamie, Andrew, loving great-great uncle to Nathaniel, a respected colleague and a treasured friend. John was predeceased by sisters Etta (Clare ROUTLEY,) Mary (Wilf BYCE,) Lily MCINNES/MCINNIS, niece Carol ROUTLEY and great nephew Ryan DOIGE. John was born in Fort William, Ontario on August 26, 1927. He attended Hamilton Normal School and then taught school in Hamilton, Toronto and East York where he became a Reading Consultant and a Consultant for Gifted Children. From 1963-1967 John was the Principal at The Institute of Child Study, Research School, University of Toronto. He earned his Doctorate of Education from Columbia University in 1967 and was an Associate Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education from 1967 until 1985. John was an outstanding teacher and for over three decades he tirelessly championed innovative methods in literacy education for children. Since the late 1950's he was an author or co-author of more than 600 important resources for children and educators. John MCINNES/MCINNIS - teacher, author, innovator, mentor, lover of the Arts and animals, gardener, wonderful family member and generous friend - a gentle man. Cremation with private family funeral. A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held at The Old Mill Inn, 21 Old Mill Rd, Toronto, at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12th, 2008. Friends and professional colleagues are warmly invited to attend. On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, Jason Charles GARDNER passed away at University Hospital, at the age of 84. Beloved and devoted husband of Marjorie (BYCROFT) for 62 years. Loving father of Sally PATROCH (David,) Grant (Elizabeth,) and the late Paul. Father-in-law of Sharlene. Much loved grandfather of Tyler, Brent, Katie, Mark, James, Vanessa, Kingsley, and Tiffany and his two great-granddaughters Grayden and Qwynn. Dear brother of Madeline FERGUSON and Ann PARSONS. Friends may call on Friday, April 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the James A. Harris Funeral Home, 220 Saint_James Street at Richmond, where a private funeral service will be conducted. Interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Parkwood Hospital or the charity of your choice would be gratefully acknowledged.
