John, Ed.D. (1927-2008)
On March 1st, after a short acute illness, John passed away peacefully
with family members at his side, at Saint_Joseph's Health Centre,
Toronto. John was a loving brother to Roberta (deceased husband

John was born in Fort William, Ontario on August 26, 1927. He
attended Hamilton Normal School and then taught school in Hamilton,
Toronto and East York where he became a Reading Consultant and
a Consultant for Gifted Children. From 1963-1967 John was the
Principal at The Institute of Child Study, Research School, University
of Toronto. He earned his Doctorate of Education from Columbia
University in 1967 and was an Associate Professor at the Ontario
Institute for Studies in Education from 1967 until 1985. John
was an outstanding teacher and for over three decades he tirelessly
championed innovative methods in literacy education for children.
Since the late 1950's he was an author or co-author of more than
600 important resources for children and educators. John

- teacher, author, innovator, mentor, lover of the Arts and animals,
gardener, wonderful family member and generous friend - a gentle
man. Cremation with private family funeral. A memorial service
to celebrate John's life will be held at The Old Mill Inn, 21 Old
Mill Rd, Toronto, at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12th, 2008.
Friends and professional colleagues are warmly invited to attend.

from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the James A. Harris Funeral Home, 220 Saint_James
Street at Richmond, where a private funeral service will be conducted.
