Born September 29, 1922, in Kristinestad, Finland, passed away
peacefully at home in St. Catharines, Ontario, on February 12,
2008 after a short but difficult battle with cancer. Emil Erland
ERLING ('Dutch') was the
son of the late Henrik Erland and Aina
Cecilia (née
ERIKS.)
Predeceased by brother Ernest, survived
by brother Donald, sister Hulda. Generous and supportive father
of Elizabeth (Bruce
DAVIES), Kristen, Sally (Scott
BARTLE) and
Jonathan, and grandfather to Zena, Kela, Finn, Calder, Nico and
Jesse.
Predeceased by his ex-wife JoAnn (née
BURCH.)
Emil immigrated
with his parents at an early age to Canada and grew up in St. Catharines.
An able athlete and excellent student, he was a Rotary Medalist
at the St. Catharines Collegiate and Vocational Institute in
1941. Immediately after high school, he became a Flying Officer
with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as Navigator with
the 'Jardin' crew of Squadron 625, completing a tour of duty
between November 1944 and April 1945. As a benefit of his wartime
service, he was able to get a university education and graduated
from the University of Toronto with a degree in Mechanical Engineering
in 1949. He spent his entire career as a consulting engineer,
a role for which he was exceptionally well suited. He worked
initially with Hanright and Company Limited, becoming Vice-President
and Chief Engineer. He was then Chief Engineer Power at Sandwell
and Company. In 1963 he became a Partner of White, Mossop and
Erling Associates, Consulting Engineers, where he spent the remainder
of his working life. Emil was an active member of the local business
and charitable community, and was respected and well liked by
all who knew him. He was a Past President of the St. Catharines
Chamber of Commerce, a Past Chairman of the St. Catharines Business
Development Commission, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International,
a Past Chairman of the Niagara Chapter of the Engineering Institute
of Canada, and a Life Member of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers. An avid golfer, curler and card player (bridge and
cribbage), he will be missed by his many Friends. He was a member
of the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club and the Lamplighters'
Investment Club. Arrangements entrusted to the George Darte Funeral
Home. Cremation has taken place. A reception to honour Emil's
life and share remembrances will be held at the St. Catharines
Golf and Country Club on Monday, February 25th from 4 p.m. to
6 p.m. Very special thanks to the caring staff at Paramed and
the Juravinsky Cancer Centre for their support and assistance
during the past several months. In lieu of flowers, donations
in memory of Emil
