Formerly of R.R.#6 Thamesville, passed away peacefully at Copper Terrace, Chatham on Tuesday May 20, 2008 at the age of 92. Born in Tilbury East Twp., daughter of the late William and Julia TOOMER. Helena was a member of the Kent Bridge Women's Institute, and the Pie Ladies of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. She had volunteered in the Tuck Shop at Thamesview Lodge for many years. Beloved wife of the late Edward PUGH (1980.) Loving mother of Stuart PUGH (Dolores) of Charing Cross, Joanne DIETRICH (Phil) of Chatham and Gerald PUGH of R.R.#6 Thamesville. Loving grandmother of Brian, Kevin, Crystal, Dustin, and Derek PUGH, Jeffrey and Jonathan DIETRICH. Sadly missed by 6 beautiful great-granddaughters. Dear mother-in-law of Debra PUGH of Chatham. Husband of the late Doris (GRIFFIN) McKILLEN (May 3, 2008.) Dear mother of Danny (Mary) McKILLEN of London, Paul McKILLEN, Bonnie WELLAR, Janice DOWLING, Dorothy (Jim) TRAVIS and grandaughter Ruth Anne (Jamie) HIOTT all of Ingersoll. Dear grandfather of Melinda, Jennifer, Jimmy, Darla, Peggy, Darla, Steven and Carrie. Great-grandfather of Amanda, Mathew, Brady, Abigail, Douglas, Hayley, Michelle and Jessie. Brother-in-law of Ruth PORCHAK of Ingersoll. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Born July 17th, 1924. On Friday, March 14th, 2008 at his home in Oakville Jack died peacefully with his beloved wife, Maida, at his side. Dear father of the late John (Jane) and Kate (Bill GREENFIELD.) Adored Grandfather of Jay PUGH, and Jessica (Brandon HUNE,) Michael (Allison) and Meaghan GREENFIELD. Great-Grandfather to Dear Daniel HUNE. Brother of Bob PUGH and Uncle to David and Barbara (Steve ROGERS.) Brother-In-Law of Bob SHERWOOD (Sally) and Uncle to Phillip, Michael, Tiffany and Paula. In his 92nd year at his residence at Fellowship Towers, Toronto. Following a distinguished career in the navy before and during the Second World War, he settled in Canada and turned to writing. He was the author of numerous essays, articles, books and poems. His masterpiece was The Babylonian Woe The Babylonian Woe, a history of money. Translated into many languages (including Hungarian and Mandarin!), the book continues to intrigue readers, as it has since it was published in the 1970s. Captain ASTLE is survived by his first cousin, Sylvia PUGH and family of Cambridge, Ontario and the Astle, Edwards, and Moya families in the United Kingdom. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 from 7: 00-9:00 p.m. A full funeral mass will follow on Thursday, April 17, 2008, at 2: 00 p.m. in Saint Thomas's Anglican Church, 383 Huron Street (at the St. George subway station). April 17, 2008, in Barrie, Ontario, after a long illness, aged 62. Beloved son of the late J.P.A. LATOUR and Florence VAUGHAN. Will be sadly missed and forever cherished by his children Robin (Greg PUGH,) Michael and Adam. Always remembered by lifelong friend and former wife Donna STERN, sister Anne (Bob LEWANDOWSKI,) brothers Mark, Daniel (Linda), and David (Nina) and special friend Enid SOLLOWAY. His many nieces and nephews and, in Montreal, his numerous Friends, colleagues and patients will all miss him.
Deeply loved and cherished by best friend and loving partner Susan Young MacINTYRE who, with Scott and Megan will miss him greatly. In Barrie and Toronto, his colleagues and patients will mourn his passing. Special thanks to Doctor PRESSNAIL and the team of the Palliative Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital - Barrie, who were always supportive and caring to him and his family. Predeceased by his first wife, Loreen, and sisters Irene (HULBERT) and Dorothy (COSTIE) and brother Warren. Memorial service to be held Thursday, May 22nd, at First United Church, 151 Lakeshore Rd. HARPER, John M. " Jack," Q.C., B.A., LL.B.
After a long and full life, Jack died on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Saint Mary's General Hospital. He celebrated his 91st birthday on June 26th. Jack is survived by his beloved wife Mary (JAMIESON,) to whom he was married to for 65 years. He will be lovingly remembered with pride by his children, Jim and his wife Pauline HARPER of Waterloo, Susan and her husband John PALMER of Kitchener and George and his wife Doris HARPER of Waterloo. Jack was a great role model to his grandchildren and will be fondly remembered by them John HARPER and his wife Megan, Cynthia and her husband Derick ROSE, Stephen PALMER, Jill WROBEL, Tania and her husband Alan WILLEMSEN and Tiffany and her husband Ron VAN SOMEREN and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Rev. Betty PUGH and her husband Rev. Bill PUGH of Waterloo. He was predeceased by his parents Grace (MICKLE) and George H. HARPER and sister Helen DURNAN. Jack served his country with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada in Canada, The Caribbean, England, France and Holland. He was appointed Honourary Colonel, Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada in 1990. He began his career as a lawyer 1948 when he joined Walter McGibbon to establish the firm of McGibbon and HARPER. Through numerous mergers in his law career, Jack eventually retired from Gowlings as General Counsel December 31, 2007. He was the former President and Director of the Waterloo Insurance Company, former Vice-Chair and Director of The Economical Mutual Insurance Company and a former Director and Chair of the Board of Directors of The Equitable Life Insurance Company of Canada. He was Past President of the Waterloo Lions Club, K-W Counselling Services, Westmount Golf and Country Club (Honourary Member), Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo and Area and The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation. He was a former Chair and member of First United Church, a former member of the Board of Governors of Wilfred Laurier University, was selected as one of the early recipients of the K-W Citizen of the Year Award, named a Paul Harris Fellow and most recently the City of Waterloo named a new library in his honour, the John M. Harper Public Library. Friends are invited to share their memories of Jack with his family at the Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Sunday, July 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and Monday, July 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate his long and full life will be held at First United Church, King and William Streets in Waterloo on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Rick HAWLEY officiating. Interment will follow in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo, followed by a reception. Peacefully at Victoria Place Retirement Home in Kitchener, on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 in her 90th year. Predeceased by her loving husband William Charles "Bill" (1982). Loving mother to the late William Andrew "Andy" PUGSLEY (1986,) the late Charles Michael "Mike" PUGSLEY (2006) and Marilyn (Stuart) PHILLIPS. Nell was predeceased by her siblings Neil CURRIE, Ethel FINNIGAN and Anne HAINES. Dear Grandmother to Pam, Wendy, Kylee, Tracy, Cindy, Michael, Evelyn, Gwen and Conrad. G.G. will be lovingly remembered by her many great-grandchildren. Nell will be fondly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Kathryn BRUM and her devoted nieces Joanne, Mary-Ellen and Katherine.
