McGARRY, P.D. "Des," M.B., B.Ch., (F.R.C.S.C.)
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Doctor P.D. (Des)
McGARRY on Monday, July 14, 2008, having just celebrated his
86th birthday. Desmond was born in County Galway, Ireland in
1922. Des was the proud father of Patrick (Toronto), Colette
(Japan) and Katherine (Peter)
KILTY
(Newmarket) and proud Grandda
of Paulyne, Briana and Colin
KILTY.
Des studied medicine at the National University of Ireland, Galway,
and then immigrated to Canada in 1952, where he worked in Newfoundland
as a country doctor, traveling the coastline by small boat administering
to those in need. He then moved to Montreal where he did his
residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1956, he accepted
a position at Scarborough General Hospital and it was there he
stayed until retiring in 1992. While at Scarborough General,
he also played an important role in the lives of young single
mothers by dedicating 35 years of service to Rosalie Hall.
Des' love of Ireland drew him back during retirement, where he
built a home and lived by the sea in the small fishing village
of Barna in his native County Galway. During his years in Barna,
Des would welcome any and all visitors who were in the area to
stop by, for a pint, a meal, or a place to stay
but the one thing you were always assured of, was a great story
or discussion, as Des loved the art of conversation. Des returned
to Canada in 2007 to be closer to his family as his health began
to deteriorate, and in keeping with his wishes, he will be making
one last trip to Ireland, where he plans to stay.
We would like to thank the residents and staff of Park Place
Manor in Aurora for their kindness, support and most importantly
for providing laughter and Friendship to Des. We would also like
to thank Doctor Ken
ROBERTS, nurses Mary Lyon and Libby, of Southlake
Regional Healthcare Centre's Cancer floor and the great team
of Personal Support Workers from Regional Nursing Care.
Des' family will receive Friends this Friday, July 18, 2008,
at a memorial to be held in the main Chapel of the Hospital at
Providence Healthcare (2376 St. Clair Avenue East (at Warden
Avenue), Scarborough) at 11 a.m. Reception to follow. In lieu
of flowers, donations may be made to Southlake Regional Cancer
Centre or a charity of your choice.
