Doris went through life with the full force of her fiery red
hair. She was mischievous and independent; to the consternation
of her siblings, she always came out "smelling like a rose."
She was born Doris
McCOSHEN to parents Irene and Gerald. The
family, including Doris's two brothers and three sisters, moved
during the Depression to Sudbury, where Gerald took a job in
the mining industry.
Doris decided not to go to high school, instead taking a job
at a laundromat. In 1945, she met Wilfred
DESJARDINS, a friend
of her brothers. They married on Christmas Day, 1947. They were
together for almost 57 years, until Wilfred's death in 2004.
Wilfred had quit school at 16 and lied about his age to begin
working in the mines for Inco, eventually becoming a shift manager.
His and Doris's lives around the mines were based on building
a strong family and a close-knit community.
Although money was tight at times, Doris encouraged her children
- Beverly, Brian, Lorraine and James - in their education and
hobbies. As a committee member at the local playground, she made
sure the community's facilities were taken care of and that there
were plenty of activities for area children. While team sports
were common for boys, Doris bemoaned the lack of activities for
girls. So when she found out about a new hockey-like sport called
ringette, she was the first to offer it at the playground in
the winter of 1963. She became the first coach of the first organized
ringette team in Canada.
Doris was always willing to help others. She was a member of
her church's Catholic Women's League for more than 25 years and
she delivered Meals on Wheels, having learned to drive at 45,
when she and Wilfred bought their first car.
As the couple aged, they bought a trailer site at a camp outside
the city. Doris's children and grandchildren have fond memories
of 25 summers of swimming, playing and cooking over an open fire.
Even after a quadruple bypass and a stroke that left her nearly
blind in one eye, Doris - lovingly known as Nan, Nana and Queenie
- continued to be an avid spectator at her grandchildren's sports
tournaments, dance competitions and theatre performances. She
taught all who were interested how to cook sugar pies, butter
tarts and pickles.
When her children were cleaning her house after she passed away,
they found wishbones hanging over the kitchen sink. There were
nine, one for each of her grandchildren. Doris's joking and her
independent spirit will be missed, but her joy and best wishes
remain.
Amy COULTERMAN is Doris's granddaughter.
