CLEMENS,
Ruth (née
GOLDSMITH)
Wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, lawn bowler, curler,
fashion plate. Born February 24, 1925, in Oshawa, Ontario Died
November 27, 2007, in Oshawa of breast cancer, aged 82.
By Lindsay
ZIER-
VOGEL,
Page L8
Nana Ruth was no typical granny. She had all four of her grandchildren
reading betting forms at the racetrack by the time they were
3, making up new rules for Scrabble by 6, and, on rainy afternoons,
helping her set up the couch as a net in the middle of the cottage
in Haliburton, Ontario, for an intense, Nana-initiated indoor
tennis tournament.
Born Ruth GOLDSMITH, her childhood wasn't the easiest, growing
up in a large family on a farm in Oshawa, Ontario But she made
sure her children and grandchildren's childhoods were glorious.
With Ruth, fun reigned supreme.
Two years after Doug
CLEMENS, a dashing young Royal Canadian
Air Force instructor, laced up her skates, she married him. They
created a true partnership - it was always Nana and Papa, Ruth
and Doug. They didn't preach or proselytize, but for 62 years
were a living example of kindness and generosity - always ready
with a moving truck, a paint roller or a box of doughnuts.
Ruth was a determined lady, stubborn even. She overcame a high-school
education cut short by the Second World War to become a successful
real estate agent in her 40s. Then, in her late 70s, she defied
fading knees and creaky arms by inventing a device so she could
continue throwing rocks at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club.
Stylish to the end, with a tube of lipstick forever in her pocket,
Ruth dressed in well-cut suits in her signature colour - cream.
Even in her 80s, she outshone her fashionista granddaughters
with a new Louis Vuitton purse and countless pairs of heels.
Ruth didn't much like talking about the past; she preferred instead
to live in the present, but did say once that her father was
as much a man of tears as he was of smiles - happy tears, she
explained. Turns out it was genetic, and Ruth learned early on
to keep a handkerchief tucked into her sleeve. She passed this
trick on to her two daughters, Sharon and Susan, who in turn
passed it on to their children.
From the initial diagnosis, Ruth dealt with her breast cancer
with dignity and poise. She never once complained, and still
found the strength to offer her signature seal of approval on
a recently purchased pair of boots or a haircut: "That's sharp."
After a long and stoic struggle, Ruth died at home on the day
of her and Papa's wedding anniversary.
Ruthie to her brothers and sisters, Goldie to a select few, Ruthie
the Riveter when she built airplanes at General Motors during
the forties, she was an ordinary woman and an extraordinary Nana.
And we have all learned to keep a tissue tucked in our sleeves,
because you never know when you'll laugh so hard you'll cry.
Lindsay ZIER-
VOGEL is Ruth's granddaughter.

ZIMMERMAN,
William "
Bill"
Martin
Born 1930 in Winnipeg, died in Vancouver March 29th, 2008. A graduate
of Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba (M.S.W./56),
Bill was an athlete, an actor (MTC; U of M) and a social
worker in Winnipeg and Ottawa. As a probation officer at Winnipeg's
Juvenile Court, Bill found delinquent youth were the invariable
result of families lacking access to services he thought communities
should provide. When he moved to Ottawa with his own family,
he joined the city's Social Planning Council to help address
those needs. He soon discovered that stronger financial support
was required by Ottawa-Hull United Way agencies. As director
of the United Way for 13 years, he believed strongly that its
funds should be determined by the communities' needs rather than
by donors' choice. Privately, as a jazz fan and a sports enthusiast,
he was expert in the arcana of both. In his retirement in Sechelt,
British Columbia, Bill found a fellow sports buff in Gilbert
Joe, an elder with the Sechelt Indian Band, whose memory he chose
to honour by assembling a unique collection of photos of aboriginal
athletes, now a permanent exhibition at the town's Kinnikinnick
Elementary School. Bill's positive personality, which found humour
even in dialysis units and hospital wards, sustained him to the
end. Bill is survived by his wife Sheila, and their children
Kate, John and Frances, sons-in-law Ron
SHEWCHUK and Peter
FINDLAY,
and four grandchildren, Zoe and Jake

Elizabeth, or Buzz, as she was affectionately known by her closest
of Friends, made lasting impressions throughout her lifetime.
Her exceptional organizational abilities were nurtured at an
early age and surfaced most prominently when she served as a
dietician in the Royal Canadian Air Force overseas from 1943-45.
This was followed by 38 dedicated years as a dietician at Burwash
Hall, Victoria University, University of Toronto. She retired
in 1983 to Niagara-on-the-Lake and more recently Virgil.
Buzz's modesty was outshone by her generosity, and she provided
much quiet support of many non-profit organizations throughout
her retirement years. As per Elizabeth's wishes, a private family
service will take place on April 12, 2008. Funeral arrangements
have been entrusted to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chapel of the
Morgan Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Niagara-on-the-Lake

KALMAKOFF,
Sandra
Mary
(January 27, 1952-March 29, 2008)
With great sadness, we announce the death of Sandy
KALMAKOFF,
beloved mother, partner, sister and friend. Sandy died at the
Palliative Care Unit, Saint Paul's Hospital in Vancouver after
courageously facing and coping with the challenge of cancer.
Sandy was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the second child
of Michael
KALMAKOFF and Elizabeth Allison
(ZINKAN)
KALMAKOFF.
A seeker of truth and social justice from an early age, she studied
philosophy at the University of Saskatchewan and spent five years
as a Canadian University Services Organization volunteer: three
years teaching in Nigeria, and two years promoting appropriate
technology in Papua New Guinea. She also worked for Canada World
Youth in Toronto. She settled in Vancouver in 1980 where she
was active in feminist and peace organizations. Sandy became
a teacher, worked for a number of years, then returned to school
and was awarded a Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology
by the University of British Columbia in 1994. She was employed
as an elementary school counsellor for many years in the Surrey
School District. As a Registered Play Therapist she was particularly
interested in helping children understand and grow through and
beyond difficult and traumatic experiences.
Sandy loved music from an early age and played violin with the
Saskatoon Youth Orchestra and the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.
When her son Jacob began to study the violin, Sandy began to
play again after a long hiatus. Over the years she was a member
of three different music ensembles. Music helped her bear the
emotional and spiritual burden of disease.
Living with cancer Sandy became involved with the Callanish Society
and found hope and inspiration by attending retreats, support
groups and participating in their art therapy programs.
Predeceased by her parents, Sandy is survived and will be deeply
missed by her partner, Lezlie
WAGMAN, their son, Jacob
KALMAKOFF,
sisters Elizabeth
KALMAKOFF and Jane
KALMAKOFF, brother David
KALMAKOFF, nephew Erin
WEIR and many relatives and Friends.
If desired donations can be made to the Callanish Society, www.callanish.org.
