50th Anniversary Cruise in Support of The Ontario Genealogical Society

As part of The Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations, a cruise in support of OGS was planned and conducted by "Champions" Mary Rossiter and Cathy Blackburn. On September 8, 2011, 36 avid genealogists from across Ontario and from as far away as Indiana and California met in New York City to join in the adventure. Arrangements had been made to spend time in the city prior to the departure of the Carnival Glory on the 10th. As arranged the participants were ferried past Lady Liberty to Ellis Island where they learned more about the immigrants’ experiences before making their home in America or moving on to Canada.

In the following days, cruisers spent time at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society where they were greeted and shared a presentation on the organization’s holdings. Many cruisers found answers to queries they had previously sent for specific family names. The New York Public Library also held answers for many of our researchers.

Boston, Massachusetts found cruisers pouring over materials in the Boston Public Library or New England Historic and Genealogical Society. Portland, Maine provided opportunities to visit the historic fort or other sites and enjoy a lobster dinner. In New Brunswick, cruisers visited a variety of research and historic sites including the United Empire Loyalist Cemetery – a very moving experience. Members of the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia greeted everyone in Halifax to share common interests and to provide access to the archival information before the Carnival Glory headed back to New York City.

Well-known speaker Dave Obee of British Columbia shared his genealogical knowledge during the two at-sea days and everyone enjoyed on-board evening events and off-shore activities of their choice.

Thanks to our organizers and cruisers about $2800 was raised for OGS.

For more information and photos, see the article in the November 2011 issue of NewsLeaf read a more detailed account of the cruise.
