Description
Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Sandwich (now WIndsor) is the oldest church in Essex County. It existed under the New France as well as the British era. It was established as a mission in the summer of 1767 and was called the Mission of our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons of Detroit. In 1742 it was moved to the south end of Bois Blanc (now Boblo Island). In May of 1747 the mission was destroyed by rebel Hurons and was rebuilt on the south shore at the bend of the Detroit RIver in a tract of land given to the church by the Hurons . This place was called La Pointe de Montrรฉal. New settlers began to arrive from Quebec in 1749 and many were granted land on the south shore of the river, and soon Assumption church on the south shore became their place of worship.
