OGS Support Restores CanadaGenWeb Cemetery Project
CanadaGenWeb Cemetery Project is a Canadian cemetery photo site offering a free and searchable listing of over 18,000 known Canadian cemeteries. Unfortunately, their photos were hosted by Ancestry’s Rootsweb, which Ancestry closed in late December, and the headstone photos have been unavailable since then.
Steve Fulton UE, Vice President of The Ontario Genealogical Society, approached the CanadaGenWeb coordinator with an offer of assistance. On March 31, CanadaGenWeb Cemetery Project came back online with a clean new website and full access to all of its headstone photos thanks to a web hosting agreement with OGS. Work will continue to evolve over the next few weeks as the website settles into its new server.
OGS’s role in the restoration of access to the CanadaGenWeb Cemetery Project reflects our commitment to the preservation of Ontario’s genealogical heritage and our desire to develop partnerships with other organizations and persons to maintain their genealogical records and help them continue to make them available to their own members and the public.
OGS operates 34 separate websites together with the OGS Private Cloud for data storage and backup, and is honoured to have been selected to operate CanadianHeadstones.com. OGS also operates OntarioAncestors.org and OntarioFamilyHistory.org, supports Peter & Barbara Bolton’s Port Hope history site, A Living Past, and sponsors the virtual genealogy society, The Nextgen Genealogy Network.
