Halton County is a bit of an anomaly, with Toronto Township to the
east being the last sections of land facing the United States between
Montréal and Detroit to be surveyed. Early settlement made use of ten
thousand year old native trails while establishing and adopting the
surveyed township layout. While remaining untouched physically by the
War of 1812 the main transit road between York and Niagara bisected
the county about where todays’ Queen Elizabeth Highway stands and
has provided some interesting remains with a definite postal connection.
This presentation is the culmination of many years work looking into
the difficult pre Post Office records period of Halton history
