Today, August 21, 2019, the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society (based in Virgina) announced their intention to merge the two organizations and to continue as the National Genealogical Society.
Ontario Ancestors was a charter member of FGS in 1976, which was formed to provide support to genealogical and historical societies. Key objectives during the past four decades have been to:
– promote the study of genealogy,
– stimulate the activities of state and local organizations,
– provide resources that enable genealogical organizations to succeed in pursuing their missions, advocate for the preservation of records.
FGS commented that the intended merger with NGS will enhance their ability to support societies and offer services that will help strengthen them and help them to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing, technology-driven, volunteer-challenged environment.
NGS was organized in Washington, DC, in 1903 to serve and grow the genealogical community by providing education and training, fostering increased quality and standards, and promoting access to and preservation of genealogical records.
