Description

The names of landowners from the 1877 HIstorical Atlas of Ontario County by J. H. Beers & Co. township maps have been copied exactly as they appeared. Sometimes a name has been indecipherable, often a letter, or letters were obscured by a line or mark on the original. In that period of time due to lack of education, names frequently were misspelled or spelled phonetically. Searchers are thus reminded to look beyond their name’s spelling as they know it, as well as watching for letters dropped from the beginning or ending of the name. 

This current publication has included the 10 township transcripts in 1 volume, referencing a virtual link to the The Ontario Historical County Maps Project and another link to a description of the Crown Survey Systems for the Province of Ontario (Upper Canada).

The historic County of Ontario contained 10 townships (8 of which are now included in Durham Region):

Brock Township

Mara Township (now part of Ramara Township in Simcoe County)

Pickering Township (now divided into the City of Pickering and the Town of Ajax)

Rama Township (now part of Ramara Township in Simcoe County)

Reach Township (now amalgamated with Scugog Township and Cartwright Township, formerly in Durham County)

Scott Township (now amalgamated with Uxbridge Township)

Scugog Township

Thorah (now amalgamated with Brock Township)

Uxbridge Township

Whitby & East Whitby Townships (now the Town of Whitby and the City of Oshawa)
