Description

The Hoffman (Huffman) Cemetery is located in the Cloverdale Beach area of Colchester Township. After the American Revolution, Rudolph Huffman, a United Empire Loyalist, came to this part of Canada from Virginia on May 4, 1792.ย ย He obtainedย 600 acresย along the shores of Lake Erie. This cemetery lies on a part of that originalย 600 acreย family farm.ย ย Many of the Huffman family descendants still live in the Colchester area.ย

The Hutchins family farm cemetery is found in the Colchester South region within the Town of Essex. This is an inactive cemetery. It was active forย roughly aย half-century from the mid-nineteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century. The cemetery still occupies the original location as it did during the nineteenth century.ย

Only a few headstones could be transcribed in these pioneer cemeteries.ย  The Hoffman cemetery has only 4 transcriptions although a memorial stone for Rudolph Hoffman was erected more recently with additional names of those buried in the cemetery.ย  It can be found here.ย

The Hutchins Cemetery has only 3 stones transcribed. William Hutchins petitioned for land for his service during the time he worked at the Kingโ€™s Navy Yard. He was granted 141 acres on Lot 83, Colchester, in 1803. That is the location of the Hutchins Pioneer Cemetery that is down a pathway, off the Cornwall Beach Road and in the corner of a field, beneath a grove of trees, but the family has erected a memorial stone during their gravesite project described here.
