Description

The 1861 Canada Census was the first census to identify people as either Coloured Persons, Mulatto or Indian“.  The 1864 Windsor Census also identified people in the same way.  The 1861 Census only listed a person born outside of Canada by their country of birth, whereas the 1864 census encouraged Americans to identify the state where they were born.

This information was used to conduct Black History Research by the Research Team of the Essex County Branch of Ontario Ancestors, which will be published soon.

The file has 34 pages.  536 Black residents were found in the 1861 census and 818 were found in the 1864 census.
