Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Sandwich (now WIndsor) is the oldest church in Essex County.  It existed under the New France as well as the British era.  It was established as a mission in the summer of 1767 and was called the Mission of our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons of Detroit.  In 1742 it was moved to the south end of Bois Blanc (now Boblo Island). In May of 1747 the mission was destroyed by rebel Hurons and was rebuilt on the south shore at the bend of the Detroit RIver in a tract of land given to the church by the Hurons . This place was called La Pointe de Montréal. New settlers began to arrive from Quebec in 1749 and many were granted land on the south shore of the river, and soon Assumption church on the south shore became their place of worship.

This publication was prepared by the French Research Centre and contains the marriage records of Assumption Church from 1749-1985.  The sources for the marriages were:
