Description

Central Grove Cemetery in Harrow, Ontario, has a significant history as a Black cemetery in Essex County, dating back to the late 1800s.ย It is located on Walker Road and was initially part of a larger land donation by William McCurdy in 1880. The cemetery became the burial ground for the Central Grove Church, established with the support of the Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Philadelphia. The church and cemetery played a vital role in the lives of African Canadians, providing religious freedom and a place of remembrance.ย

The file has 4 pages listing 43 individuals with birth and death dates and in some cases, ages.ย  Names are in alphabetical order by SURNAME.

Please review the cemetery indexes before making a purchase.ย  Members of the Essex County Branch of OGS can view this file in the Cemetery section of the Members Library.
