The initial Residential School was on 165 acres located along the Nebskwashi River, across from the Chapleau Roman Catholic Cemetery. Begun in 1908, the frame school closed in 1920 and succumbed to a fire in 1924. In 1920 the second Chapleau Indian Residential School was built on an 82 acre site along the Nebskwashi River opposite the Chapleau Electric Light and Power Company plant. In 1948 the four-storey brick complex closed and was demolished in 1950. In 2015, a pedestal was found containing two lists of names totalling 28.
