Extensive land settlement in Thunder Bay District started when the Ontario government pass the Free Grant and Homesteads’ Act in 1868. The Department of Lands and Forests (now the Ministry of Natural Resources) kept recoords of the original transfer of Crown land to private ownership. The information in this book is taken from those records as well as from the mining patents issued by the Department of Mines, and the land grants provided by the government as a reward for military service.

This index covers 40 townships and gives the names of the first grantee or mining claim holder,  the exact location of the land and the date of the patent, listed by township with an alphabetical surname index. The land transactions range from the 1870s to 1950 and list over 8,425 names.
