Description

John A. Acton, FIGRS

From 1803, the British government required a ship’s master, or the captain, to list all passengers at the ship’s point of departure and, from 1817, a list was also required at disembarkation. Unfortunately, these lists were rarely preserved. A few have been located on either side of the Atlantic. Most of the studies made of the great migration during the years between 1815 and 1860, in which some seven-and-a-half million people crossed the Atlantic from Britain to Canada in sailing vessels, have dwelt on aspects of this mass movement that seem horrific to us today.

The index found in this book was compiled from a small number of passenger lists discovered in the various records of the British Colonial Office. These records are on microfilm and are available to the researcher on interlibrary loan from the Library and Archives of Canada.
