History:

A Methodist Episcopal Chapel referred to as the โ€œChapel in the Bushโ€ was erected in the early 1800s on a hill owned by John McDavid (or McDeade), and served as barracks during the War of 1812. The cemetery was known to have been used for the burial of Janot Nichol in 1811, though there are claims to earlier interments of McDavidโ€™s children and Phobe Bates in 1807. Following the Battle of Stoney Creek in 1813, many of the casualties were buried here, while the remaining bodies were buried at Smithโ€™s Knoll. In 1830, James Gage donated the property to the Episcopal Methodist Church, which in 1833 become a Wesleyan Methodist Church until the Methodist Union. In 1913, with a church no longer at the site, it became a municipal cemetery.
